This is a translation of the description of the new book “La verità sulla sigaretta elettronica” (the Italian for “The truth about e-cig”) written by Fabio Beatrice, director of the San Giovanni Bosco – Anti Smoking Center in Turin, in cooperation with Johann Rossi Mason, scientific journalist.
The book (on Amazon it’s available the Kindle version – Italian only) focuses on a guided and conscious use of the e-cig as an useful tool in the fight against tobacco.
The authors wanted to let people understand that star using e-cig doesn’t mean to miraculously stop smoking. This is the worst way to start quitting smoke and it will probably result in an early abandon of the e-cig.
The book is based on the results of a study published in November 2014 and conducted by the researchers of the Smoke, Alcohol and Drugs Observatory of the Italian National Institute of Health and of the of San Giovanni Bosco Hospital Anti-smoke center in Turin.
34 volunteers were involved in the survey: they were recruited by the anti-smoking center of the San Giovanni Hospital of Turin among those who declared to smoke at least 20 cigarettes a day and not to succeed in giving up smoking.
An e-cig was given to every participant and also everyone was illustrated with the right procedures to be followed and how nicotine is absorbed in order to allow the correct assumption.
From the study emerged that after a month of use, 74% of the subjects use only the electronic cigarette; 18% use both e-cig and tobacco cigarettes but drastically reduced the latter (maximum 5 cigarettes a day). Only 8% go back to smoking.
After four months, 50% of the participants use only the e-cig; 24% both smoke and vape and 26% go back smoking.
